so the consensus is that no one here would touch a lada or Uaz unless they were a top class mechanic, which I'm not. I'm a bit disappointed I wanted to scare the criminals in their expensive black cars with a russian lump of metal....Oh well maybe I have to think again...disco or suzuki...ho hum ...not quite as thrilling though. If only there was a portable mechanic I could put in the glove box...there's no way I'm gonna be able to learn how to do all that stuff...thanks for all your help and advice...still half hoping someone will pipe up and say russian cars are ace but it seems unlikely!

not quite. Russian cars rock , but not for everyone. U should know their many disadvantages.

throw a few 1000's on a Russian Uaz, and they rock indeed
personally, I would advise to get rid of the Volga engine and replace it by a simple V8 on electronic fuel injection

Make it waterproof, like the ignition system

carbs, K-jetronics have problem on steep hills or descends

alternative is a diesel

Suzuki seems to me quite Eastern. As far as Russia is concerned, she is more Western than Eastern in terms of culture and politics. What is the purpose and the main use of your intended purchase?
