Development
The Sovamag concern (occasionally presented SOVAMAG) was acquired by Auverland (now Panhard General Defense) in 1989. Auverland's history traces back to the acquisition of Societe International de Matériel Industrial (SIMI), a Belin Group company, by Francois Servanin in 1984. SIMI produced the A2/SAMO, an evolution of the Cournil, a robust and functional light 4 × 4. Auverland continued the evolution of the A2/SAMO into the Auverland A3, full details of which can be found elsewhere in this section.By the late 1980s Auverland was looking to expand its military business and primarily on the basis of French Ministry of Cooperation contracts for its TC-10 light vehicle, acquired the Sovamag concern in 1989. Following its acquisition of Sovamag, Auverland became known as Auverland-Sovamag, although this was generally disregarded in written references to the company. The Sovamag brand name was retained.Wishing to capitalise on the success of the functional TC-10, by 1992 Auverland had begun development of the larger Sovamag TC-24, a 2,500 kg payload light truck. Development of the 5,000 kg payload TC-54 commenced in 2006. The SOVAMAG TC-10 (4 × 4) 1,100 kg multipurpose vehicle has the general appearance of the US Jeep but is a larger vehicle and can carry a heavier (1,100 kg) payload. It has square functional military lines, features rectangular 120 × 60 mm chassis construction and galvanised body panels. Layout is entirely conventional, with the front-mounted engine and radiator protected behind a substantial front bumper and a grille guard. This grille guard can be hinged forward to provide additional front stowage capacity. The forward-opening bonnet allows easy access to the engine and all maintenance and repairs can be carried out without the need for specialist tools.There are seats for the driver and a front-seat passenger, while at the rear is the main cargo carrying area with a length of 2 m. This has a reinforced floor and bench seats for four people along each side. These seats can be folded up for access to three stowage compartments each side. A canvas roof carried on a removable light tubular steel frame provides overhead and side weather protection. In addition to carrying cargo or passengers, this area can be used to mount assorted light weapons. A hardtop version is also available, 68 examples of which have been supplied to the French Army.
